The hertz (symbol: Hz) is a unit of frequency. It is defined as the number of complete cycles per second. It is the SI derived unit of frequency in the International System of Units (SI), and is used worldwide in both general-purpose and scientific contexts. Hertz can be used to measure any periodic event; the most common uses for hertz are to describe radio and audio frequencies, more or less sinusoidal contexts in which case a frequency of 1 Hz is equal to one cycle per second.

The unit hertz is defined by the International System of Units (SI) such that the hyperfine splitting in the ground state of the caesium 133 atom is exactly 9,192,631,770 hertz, ν (hfs Cs) = 9,192,631,770 Hz. Equivalently, 1 Hz = ⁄9,192,631,770 ν (hfs Cs). This definition is derived from the SI definition of the second. Hertz are inverse, s. In practice, the hertz simply replaced the older cycle per second.

In English, hertz is used as both singular and plural. As an SI unit, Hz can be prefixed; commonly used multiples are kHz (kilohertz, 10 Hz), MHz (megahertz, 10 Hz), GHz (gigahertz, 10 Hz) and THz (terahertz, 10 Hz). One hertz simply means "one cycle per second" (typically that which is being counted is a complete cycle); 100 Hz means "one hundred cycles per second", and so on. The unit may be applied to any periodic event—for example, a clock might be said to tick at 1 Hz, or a human heart might be said to beat at 1.2 Hz. The cycle per second and the hertz are, however, not regularly used in nonsinusoidal contexts. The "frequency" (activity) of aperiodic or stochastic events, especially radioactive decay, is expressed in becquerels.

To avoid confusion, periodically varying angles are typically not expressed in hertz, but rather in an appropriate angular unit such as radians per second. A disc rotating at 60 revolutions per minute (RPM) can thus be said to be rotating at ≈6.283 rad/s or 1 Hz, where the latter reflects the number of complete revolutions per second. The conversion between a frequency f measured in hertz and an angular frequency ω measured in radians per second are:

ω = 2πf and .
This SI unit is named after Heinrich Hertz. As with every SI unit whose name is derived from the proper name of a person, the first letter of its symbol is uppercase (Hz). When an SI unit is spelled out in English, it should always begin with a lowercase letter (hertz), except where any word would be capitalized, such as at the beginning of a sentence or in capitalized material such as a title. Note that "degree Celsius" conforms to this rule because the "d" is lowercase. —Based on The International System of Units, section 5.2.

Calculate the frequency, in hertz, of the photon that is emitted when a electron falls from level n = 6 to lev
Q. Calculate the frequency, in hertz, of the photon that is emitted when a electron falls from level n = 6 to level n = 1 in the H atom.

A. Electron energy in the hydrogen atom is solely a function of the electron's principal quantum number n. This is related through the equation E = (-13.6 ev) / n^2. If an electron makes a transition from the n = 6 energy level to the n = 1 energy level, this equation tells you that there has been a change in energy of -13.6 eV - (-0.38 eV) = -13.2 eV, which is equivalent to -2.1 x 10^(-18) J. This energy is released in the form of electromagnetic radiation. Since the energy E of a photon is related to its frequency f by the equation E = hf, we have that f = E/h = (2.1 x 10^(-18) J) / (6.6 x 10^(-34) Js) = 3.2 x 10^(15) Hz. This would place it in the ultraviolet portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is where most of the Lyman series… [cont.]

how to use an electronic tuner to record the frequency aka Hertz?
Q. I have a tuner but I am not going to use it for to record the guitar's sound. I am going to record the hertz of the sound of tapping the wine glass. How can I use the tuner to do that and can I use the same tuner to record the hertz or is there needed another special kind of tuner? Thanx

A. In response to the other poster. There are only 7 major notes not 8 12 chromatic notes. In response to your question, an electronic tuner is not used for recording, it is used to create a referencence tone or frequency that is used to tune another musical instrument to a specific key.

How far is the Hertz car park at Manchester Airport for international flights?
Q. Earlier this year I rented a car at Birmingham Airport and the car park was a bit of a hike from the terminal. I've got a bit of luggage this time and want an idea of what I'm up against. Also, any advice on the best way to get out of the airport and head south to Birmingham?

A. Hi, I think you will find Manchester airport is one of the better for organisation and the car hire places are usually seconds away from the arrival lounge, once you have claimed your car just follow the signs for the M6 south and depending on the time you leave, Birmingham is at the least one and a half hours away, at peak time it can be double that. The M6 is never the best motorway to travel on, however, Birmingham is well signposted. I was there last week and there were roadworks adding to the 5 - 6 pm traffic rush!! Good luck and drive safely.
