How come my electromagnet only has one pole?
Q. I built an electromagnet and it works. When I bring a permanent magnet close to the head of the electromagnet, they are attracted, no matter which side of the permanent magnet I use. Shouldn't one side attract and the other repel?
Asked by M - Wed Feb 21 02:47:00 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Its not as complex as you think I hope... if you are using an AC source the pole of the magnet will fluctuate. More info: The frequency of change in pole will be equal to the frequency of the AC suply. That means your magnets pole will change 60 times in a second if you are using a 60Hz AC source. Thereby you may 'feel' like the N or S of the permanant magnet you use to test the electro magnet will atracts to both side of the electro magnet.
